A Year Around the Great Oak
By Gerda Muller
Floris Books
First published in 1991 under the title Unser Baum, this delightful and colorful picture book is a nature-lover’s dream! The story centers around a three-hundred-year-old great oak tree nestled in the forest near where Uncle John, a forester, and his family live. When relatives come to visit, they are taken to see the great oak in all its fall beauty. This beloved tree soon becomes the center of the children’s lives; they climb the tree, play in its shade, forage for edible foods and build dens nearby to observe nature and wildlife. The visiting relatives can’t wait until the next school break to come and play again, and they continue to return each season to see how the great oak and the rest of the forest has changed.
Children will delight in learning about different animals of the forest and their eating and sleeping patterns. Gerda Muller’s detailed illustrations are a feast for the eyes. The book finishes in the summer as the children in the area throw a birthday party to celebrate the great oak tree’s three hundred years.
