‘SMART’ and other digital utility meters are currently being deployed and mandated across New York State without adequately informing residents of the health, safety and privacy risks. In many cases, these meters are being deployed without any notification to residents or the ability to opt out.

Unlike electromechanical analog meters that have been safely used for decades, smart meters and (some) digital meters emit toxic levels of pulsed radiofrequency (RF) radiation, are fire hazards and enable companies to sell near real-time private usage data to third parties.

1.)   SAMPLE SCRIPT TO NY STATE SENATORS:

“My name is {YOUR NAME} and I live in {TOWN}.  I am calling to ask Senator {REP LAST NAME} to support Senate Bill S5632A, which would establish certain consumer rights for the protection of consumer health, safety and/or privacy needs related to digital and SMART utility meters.

‘SMART’ and other digital utility meters are currently being deployed and mandated across New York State without adequately informing residents of the health, safety and privacy risks. In many cases, these meters are being deployed without any notification to residents or the ability to opt out.

This bill would (1) allow NY residents the right to opt out of SMART/digital meter upgrade/replacement, (2) require utility companies to obtain consumer consent before installations (i.e., require an opt-in), and (3) uphold protective privacy laws by requiring utility companies to be transparent about how utility meter data is collected, managed, stored, used and sold.

I urge Senator _____to SUPPORT Senate Bill S5632A, which would protect digital and SMART utility meter rights of consumers.
