Great Vegetable Mystery Summer Camp
Can’t get your child to eat veggies? Send them to The GREAT Vegetable Mystery, a week of cooking, singing, songwriting and art all about VEGETABLES! Whole food chef and holistic nutrition educator Monica Corrado and singer/songwriter and visual artist Rachel Cross are teaming up to lead this week-long summer camp for children ages 9 to 12, Monday-Friday, August 3-7 from 9am-1:30pm in Takoma Park/Silver Spring. This is not about hiding vegetables in their food; it’s about having children get to know fresh, local vegetables in the kitchen. While they learn how to soup, salad, puree, pickle, and bake, they will also discover the answers to the following questions: What color veggie is highest in Vitamin C? Does it matter if veggies are raw or cooked? Naked or dressed? What vegetable can help you feel better when you have a cold? Can fries and chips are good for you? Which ones? Why? What process maximizes nutrients in the vegetables you eat, and helps you digest your food? They’ll be eating kale before the week is out! $250 plus $25 materials fee per child. Sibling and group discounts are available. Call to inquire. For more information and to register, call 240.988.9312 or simplybeingwell at aol dot com. Still not sure? Upinngil Farm, MA: Meet the Author of The Raw Milk Revolution at a fundraiser for The Massachusetts Raw Milk Network at Upinngil Farm, 411 Main Road in Gill, 3.9 miles north of Route 2. David Gumpert, author of “The Raw Milk Revolution: Behind America’s Emerging Battle Over Food Rights” (to be released in November) will be the featured guest at this fundraiser for the NOFA/Mass Raw Milk Network.
“Beginning in 2006, the agriculture departments of several large states-with
backing from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration-launched a major crackdown on small dairies producing raw milk. David Gumpert dares to ask whether regulators have the public’s interest in mind or the economic interests of dairy conglomerates. He assesses how the government’s anti-raw-milk campaign fits into a troublesome pattern of expanding government efforts to sanitize the food supply-even in the face of ever-increasing rates of chronic disease like asthma, diabetes, and allergies. The Raw Milk Revolution provides an unsettling view of the future, in which nutritionally dense foods may be available largely through
underground channels.”
Farm tour: 10:30 a.m. Buffet, featuring local dairy products and produce: 11:30 a.m. Presentation by David Gumpert: 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 and space is limited. Please contact winton@nofamass.org or 413-634-5728 for more information. To register online, go to http://tiny.cc/o3Fh5
