We all know about hormone-like compounds in plastic water bottles. Chemicals such as BPA, PCBs and phthalates have been linked to conditions like endocrine disruption and cancer. But few realize that these compounds are also in toilet paper! A 2004 study published in the UK found very high concentrations of these xenoestrogens in toilet paper. Of course, you don’t drink toilet paper, but who knows whether the compounds are absorbed through the skin. And the study found that these estrogen-pretenders do pass into wastewater and warned that toilet paper “should not be mixed with biological waste e.g. for co-composting or co-fermentation in order to derive organic fertilizers” (Gehring M and others in Popov V and others, eds. Waste Management and the Environment II. Southampton, UK, 2004).

Thank you for this excellent research and caution, Sally! From my research on this topic — It’s those more conventional, super soft, fluffier toilet paper products that are made with a slew of toxic chemicals, including those in fragrances (which include xenoestrogn chemicals like phthalates) and dyes, all of which are probably the worst of the chemical lot. In addition, they may also contain resins made from formaldehyde, as described here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2860827/ To avoid those toxins, purchase Seventh Generation, Whole Foods 365 Brand, or Green Forest, none of which are whitened with chlorine bleach, nor do they contain fragrance or formaldehyde. Instead, those manufacturers use hydrogen peroxide and other non bleach whiteners, they don’t use fragrance or dyes, and I don’t believe they include resins in their paper products, but this needs to be confirmed. Unfortunately, the problem with recycled paper content toilet paper is trace amounts of BPA. I haven’t seen the 2004 study that Sally Fallon cites above, but a study finding BPA in toilet paper came out just last month: “The Environmental Science & Technology study detected BPA in recycled-content toilet paper at microgram-per-gram concentrations; contrast that with thermal paper receipts, which contained milligram-per-gram amounts.” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jennifer-grayson/eco-etiquette-is-my-toile_b_1008317.html Besides washable cloths (not for most people, including me!), the only convenient, chemical free solution is a bidet (and filtered water of course). It make me wonder if toxic toilet paper contributes to ovary cancer . I avoid using it myself. It can be done.
